The working methodology is based on the method of María Fux and it involves all participant not only by making them learning the techniques or exercises, but also by making them accepting a unique experience that deeply enriches the relationship and breaks down the barriers that hinder communication.
The Method of María Fux
The Dance Therapy is an encounter with our inner universe and, therefore, a way of understanding not only ourselves but also the others. When we know the feelings and emotions that live inside ourselves, when we look at our fears and limitations and accept the shadows of our lives, as well as the bright aspects, we have a chance to regain the lost balance. Dancing means walking through this path not with the intellect but with the body.
The stimuli proposed by the methodology are intended to promote the re-conquest of creativity, allowing anyone to express themselves with movements that do not follow the rigid and repetitive patterns of the various techniques of dance but, on the contrary, they are always unique because they come from the individual experience and sensitivity.
The Dance Therapy therefore proposes a language that belongs to every human being, regardless of their physical or mental state, their social, economic, human conditions or age. Through the creative movements, everyone can express and assert their originality, their essence, their diversity. By doing so, they experience the pleasure of communicating beyond words with a deeper understanding of themselves and of the others.
Through this invitation to the Dance, they gradually lose their fear of the space takes the role of container, a dwelling house, a non-hostile and menacing element; the body can experience it, feel it, live it and accept it by abandoning itself to a contact that make the progressive confidence flowing while the body is expressing its abilities.
In this creative universe, the music and the silence are alternated along with other elements – such as color, shapes and stimuli offered by nature and everyday objects (old newspapers, used bamboo canes, balloons, chairs, fabrics, etc.) – in a continuous search of safety and happiness that the Dance offers as a path of growth and communication.
Thus the interpersonal differences at all levels does not represent an obstacle in this route, but actually a treasure.
The term therapy is applied to this dimension of Dance not as a Psychoanalytic study or interpretation, but as real and concrete possibility of making changes in any situation: change to overcome, welcome, understand, accept.
The Dance Therapy represents a valuable tool that can be used by doctors, psychologists, physiotherapists, teachers in order to broaden and deepen the possibilities for intervention in situations of risk, recovery, social and physical disadvantage. It starts from the awareness that in all human beings there is a sensitive part that can be recognized, awakened and valued.
Let’s deepen some essential aspects of the Methodology used by the School SI.Danza
The self-knowledge in a listening dimension
Knowing yourself is the starting point to get close to the others. This path involves the willingness to question yourself, to get naked in front of yourself in order to capture the essence of your existence; to see, recognize and accept your limitations and the potential within the context and environment in which you live. The next step is to be able to approach the others, to learn from them something new, even when they are living in a situation of suffer and difficulties. By accepting your own difficulties, you can accept the pain of another person without collapsing or getting absorbed. In such way, you can support the others and offer them the possibility of a new understanding, or change.
To the extent that it arises the dimension of self-listening, change becomes possible.
“We are in the time of listening, a time that is infinite, eternal, immense. And together we begin this adventure that fights against the staticity in order to make us feel alive again and maybe to make us understanding a child, a wife, a partner towards which the habit has taken away our understanding.” Pio Campo
Non-verbal Processes fostered by the experience
The orientation that took SI.Danza wants to enhance the feeling of a predominantly experiential journey through the infinite languages that the body possesses, and that the student experiences on himself/herself. By passing the method on himself/herself the student can “internalize” iand then express it. To boost the development of such a process, the practice shall be extended not only to the Dance Therapy but also to other forms of artistic languages, such as music, the use of voice, sounds landscapes, and folk dancing. With the awareness that comes from body experience, the theory can find its exact space-time location as a subsequent in-depth study.
Valorization of individual in the group
In the proposals of SI.Danza the individual is constantly placed in a group that contains, welcomes, supports and promotes the search for the identity of the person. The student recognizes his individual path that is at the same time the collective one.
Each individual can be identified in the group, which is made up of different levels of knowledge and experience, because the students of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of working together, without any distinction of class, receiving the same proposals. The level of awareness of the individual allows any participant to live the same proposal in a different way. The individual and the group work constantly together, feeding each others.
Integration between different disciplines
The path that each teacher suggests is set in an integrated manner with other disciplines, thanks to a team effort and to the spirit that unites the group of teachers of SI.Danza. The team is attentive and receptive to initiatives such as exhibitions or performances related to art, dance, theater. The proposals can be a starting point for reflection, depth and maturity. These proposals can be included within the training hours with the aim of expanding the growth of non-verbal processes.
